Packet Station Printer
A printer is an essential part of a packet station, in order to print messages and logs. Some characteristics to note:
- Windows 10+ Compatibility
- Make sure that the printer works with Windows 10 and later. If an add-on driver is needed, keep a copy of it on the station’s USB stick.
- Printing Technology
- Fixed stations with high volumes should use a laser printer (and should have adequate backup power to cover it, including the current spike they exhibit when they start up or wake up). Field stations and low-volume fixed stations should use an inkjet printer.
- Black and White
- Packet stations generally do not need color printing.
- Copy and Scan
- Copy and scan features are not required, but often useful.
- Power
- Fixed stations with sufficient backup power can simply run the printer off of utility AC power. Other stations should use a printer with a built-in battery, or be ready to supply power to the printer from an external battery, possibly through an inverter. (If running a laser printer through an inverter, make sure the inverter can handle the printer’s inrush current spike.)
- Spare Ink or Toner
Always have replacement cartridges on hand. Make sure they are stored according to manufacturer specs so that they remain usable.
Inkjet cartridges will dry out when not used. Run the printer occasionally to help delay this.
- Paper
- Select a printer that can operate well on plain copier paper. Store paper in a plastic tub with a dessicant.
