Email Limits and Restrictions
Maximum Email Size
To prevent abuse and conserve RF bandwidth, the SCCo ARES/RACES email service will reject messages larger than 10 MB. This includes the message headers, message body, and any attachments. (Note that attachments are generally 1.4 times larger in an email than they are on disk.) A bounce message will be sent to the sender of any rejected message.
Maximum Mailbox Size
To prevent abuse and control costs, the SCCo ARES/RACES email service limits each mailbox to 50 MB, and will reject messages that would exceed that limit. Warning messages will be sent to the mailbox, and to its owner’s external email address, when the mailbox reaches 75% of the limit, and again at 90%. Once the mailbox is full, a bounce message will be sent to the sender of any rejected message.
To avoid overflowing your mailbox, ensure that your email client is configured not to leave messages on the server after retrieval, and remember to check messages on a regular basis.
Rate Limiting
Rate limiting is applied to outbound email. Several different limits are used, including connections per unit time, messages per unit time, and recipients per message. The number of recipients per message is limited to 25. If you need to send to more recipients than that, send multiple messages.
Expiry
Messages older than 92 days are automatically deleted, whether or not they have been read. An expiry notice will be sent to the mailbox and to its owner’s external email address.
Blocked Email Attachment Extensions
A variety of file types are dangerous for transmission via email because they are executable programs and/or have the potential to damage the recipient’s machine if opened. These file types are commonly identified by their filename extensions. Files with these extensions will be blocked by our email servers.

Account Termination
E-mail accounts may be terminated for various reasons, including:
- Abuse of the service
- No logins for an extended period of time
A message explaining the reason for termination will be sent to the account holder’s external email address.
