Email Servers and Addresses
SCCo ARES/RACES operates four sets of email servers, co-located with the four packet BBSes. Each operator or tactical station using the service therefore has four email addresses and four mailboxes:
callsign@email1.scc‑ares‑races.net callsign@email2.scc‑ares‑races.net callsign@email3.scc‑ares‑races.net callsign@email4.scc‑ares‑races.net
where callsign
is the operator’s FCC call sign or the tactical station’s tactical call sign.
In email addresses, call signs are not case sensitive but are usually usually written in lower case.
To help spread the traffic load, and make addressing more predictable, each city and agency has a primary and backup email server. They should normally use their mailbox on their primary server unless it is down or unreachable, in which case they should use their mailbox on their backup email server. The primary and backup servers for each city and agency are the same as the primary and backup packet BBSes for that city or agency:
For example, if the primary packet BBS for a station’s city or agency is
W2XSC
Then their primary email address is
callsign@email2.scc‑ares‑races.net
Their primary incoming email (POP) server is
mail2.scc‑ares‑races.net
And their primary outgoing email (SMTP) server is
smtp2.scc‑ares‑races.net
The same relationship holds for the secondary servers.
