Tactical Emergency Communications
During an emergency, SCCo ARES/RACES can provide communications from EOCs and DOCs to tactical field units, and between tactical field units. Examples include:
- Fire stations
- Shelters
- Points of distribution
- CERT teams
For example, when regular communications methods aren’t working, residents who need emergency help are likely to go in person to their nearest fire station. ARES/RACES operators there can relay their needs to the appropriate dispatch center.
As another example, PIOs can use ARES/RACES services to relay announcements of public interest to shelters, where they can be posted on bulletin boards.
ARES/RACES operations are portable and can be set up nearly anywhere (including mobile vehicles). Operators are trained for flexibility and can add communications support to most any situation. (However, operators are trained to decline assignments in unsafe conditions.)
