Introduction to WiFi/Mesh Networking
Workshop Description
This workshop will cover the basic knowledge needed to configure and deploy a WiFi mesh networking node. It consists of several short modules. Each module is followed by a brief hands-on exercise. The modules cover network basics such as addressing; network equipment such as switches and routers; network design such as mesh; field power; and device configuration such as mesh nodes and VoIP telephones.
- Intended Audience
- Any new or experienced hams interested in building and deploying WiFi networks, particularly those using the Broadband HamNet mesh networking software.
- Prerequisites
- Valid Technician class or higher Amateur Radio license
- Format
- In person, 3 hours
- Participants must bring
-
Portable (laptop, netbook, etc.) computer with:
- Required: Ethernet connector
- Optional: WiFi capability
- Windows is preferred. The first exercise assumes you have a Microsoft Windows PC.
- If Linux, you must know how to configure the Ethernet and WiFi interfaces.
- If Mac, make sure you have the Firefox browser. We have seen problems with Safari.
- Standard Ethernet patch cable (straight-through, 5 ft minimum length)
-
Download and install the free program [Angry IP Scanner](http://angryip.org).
- If you don’t have a Java RTE installed, it will prompt to download and install that as well.
- We will use this program in the exercises to scan the local network
-
Mesh node
- If you have a mesh node, bring it. Make sure it has [BBHN](http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/) software v3.0.0 or greater.
- If you don’t have a mesh node, there will be units available for you to work with.
- Notebook and pen/pencil
- Copy of workshop materials (below)
-
Portable (laptop, netbook, etc.) computer with:
- Learning Objectives
- Understand basic networking concepts
- Understand basic IP addressing and subnetting
- Configure and connect a computer to a WiFi network
- Configure a WiFi mesh networking node to connect to a network of other nodes
- Configure a VoIP (Voice over IP) phone
- Use the network to make phone calls, browse web pages, and perform other tasks
- Topics Covered
- Networking terms
- IP addressing
- Exercise: IP addressing
- Networking equipment and cabling
- Exercise: equipment and cables
- Network topologies
- Broadband HamNet software
- Exercise: mesh node configuration
- Building your station
