Course Description and Materials

 

Overview: This class will cover core course materials that have been updated, newly released, or not previously discussed, in the previous 12 months.
Intended Audience: Any new or experienced hams or MACs that took any of the core courses presented in 2010 - 2011 timeframe.
Prerequisites:

Valid Technician class or higher Amateur Radio license

Course:  Any of the core courses listed at http://www.scc-ares-races.org/training.html

Length: 3 hours
Students should bring:
  • Copy of course materials (see below)
  • Pen/pencil and pad of paper
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Message Passing
    • Understand key message passing procedures
    • Properly transmit/receive an ICS-213 message
  • MAC Program
    • Understand receipt program updates
  • Packet Network
    • Build awareness of network structure
    • Understand the use of primary & secondary BBSs
    • Understand the use of tactical calls
    • Properly address messages to users in the SCCo packet network
    • Properly address messages to users outside the SCCo packet network
  • Radio Direction Finding
    • Understand key points
    • Understand how to help the Official Observer Coordinator
  • Antenna Fundamentals and Safety
    • Effectively choose and deploy antennas
    • Mitigate communications impairments
    • Know the limitations of your equipment
    • Understand how to play by the rules
  • AlertSCC
    • Understand how to update your personal contact info
  • Cross-Band Repeating
    • Understand recent changes to FCC rules
