The Los Gatos/Monte Sereno ARES/RACES group is planning their 51th “Ham Cram” class, organized by San Jose RACES as a public service to all who wish to support their community in an Emergency (or Public Service Events).
This one-day class is designed for people with little or no radio experience and will help you prepare for the Technician Class license exam - the first level of amateur radio licensing - and is a great way to increase the ranks of local ARES-RACES and CERT teams. We encourage our Ham Cram graduates to continue with the County Introduction to and Fundamentals of Emergency Communications classes and all other County ARES-RACES offerings for building and maintaining emergency radio skills.
It is an instructor-led Ham Cram with 4 instructors for the day. The slides were originally created by the Saratoga Amateur Radio Assocation (SARA) and have been updated for the current 2022-2026 Question Pool.
There have been over to 1000 graduates since 2016 with a pass rate of about 90%. Attendees come principally from Santa Clara County and are between the ages of 11 and 92, many without technical skills.
The class starts promptly at 08:00 (please arrive at least 15 minutes early for sign-in paperwork and logistics) and ends at 16:00 when the FCC Volunteer Examiners (SVVE.org) take over.
NOTE: The VEs are also prepared to administer the General and Extra exams; if you're interested in being tested for higher ratings you're welcome to come at 3:30 for the exam portion of the day. Please sign up regardless so that we have an accurate headcount.
The class will be held at El Camino Hospital's Los Gatos campus on Pollard Road, in conference rooms 2 and 3. A map will be provided to those who sign up. There will be a lunch and otber breaks; bring your own lunch, or use the cafeteria.
