2012 Sea Otter Classic April 19-22

Date: 04/19/12 Start: 6:00 AM End: 7:30 PM Location: Laguna Seca - Monterey, CA
Credential Credit (What's this?): No

We are continuing recruiting for the Sea Otter Classic which will take place in only six weeks.  We have many changes this year including a new radio plan, new staging area, and a expanded mission.

The Sea Otter Classic (SOC)  is a four-day "Celebration of Cycling."  It is regarded as the world's largest cycling festival, hosting nearly 10,000 professional and amateur athletes and 50,000 fans. The 22nd Annual SOC is April 19-22, 2012 at Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, California.  This year, the SOC will not only be hosting the best cyclists from around the globe they are also supporting the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

The Sea Otter Classic will continue the tradition of relying upon Amateur Radio operators to provide emergency and health/welfare communications in the pristine Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Public Lands “back country.”

We need about six field operators on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and mobile road support for the Gran Fondo on Saturday.  If you are new to assisting in these events, this is a great way for you to learn from more experienced hams.  You'll have the opportunity to be involved in an operation with Monterey County Sheriff, Monterey County Regional Fire, BLM BETA, National Ski Patrol, CalStar, SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula), CalFire, and FEMA California Task Force 3.  If all goes well, we'll be utilizing traditional VHF/UHF ham radios, APRS, satellite, solar power, and a field deployed dual repeater system.

We'll do our best to satisfy your preferences as to location, so sign up early for the best choices.  The field locations should be similar to last year.  So, let me know which day or days you would like to volunteer for, assignment location preference and your current experience level (i.e. first time, worked many past events, etc.) with supporting events such as this.

Please contact me at takeuchi@sbcares.org or w6tst@arrl.net if you are interested in volunteering.

I'll also need a signed copy of acknowledgement and assumption of risk form at http://www.sbcares.org/files/soc_2012_aaaor.doc

The Draft Incident Action Plan may be found at http://www.sbcares.org/event
